Short answer: Measure your product at its longest, widest and tallest points in inches, add any insert or packing you need, and give us the inside box size as Length x Width x Depth (L x W x D). You can tell us how you want the product to fit, or we can suggest a fit based on your needs.
What you’ll need
A ruler or tape measure that reads in inches, your actual product (not a drawing, if you can help it), and anything that goes in the box with it, such as tissue, a card or a pouch.
Step 1: Measure the product
Set the product the way it will sit in the box. Then measure:
- Length: the longest side, measured left to right.
- Width: the shorter side, measured front to back.
- Height: from the bottom to the highest point.
Always measure at the widest points, including handles, caps, clasps, tags or bulges. Measure several pieces if they vary.
Step 2: Add room for what goes with it
Think about everything that will be in the box: an insert, tissue paper, crinkle paper, a booklet, or several products together. Each adds size. If your product will sit in an insert, the box size depends on the insert, so let us design both together. See Box Inserts.
Step 3: Allow a little clearance
A box that’s too tight is hard to pack and may scuff the product. A box that’s too loose lets the product slide around. You can tell us exactly how you want your product to fit in the box, or give us your product size and requirements and we’ll suggest a fit.
Step 4: Write it as inside dimensions, L x W x D
Brimar writes set-up box sizes as inside dimensions in inches, always in this order: Length x Width x Depth. Length is the longer side of the opening, width is the shorter side of the opening, and depth is the vertical height. Example: 8 x 3 x 2. Don’t swap the order, even if two numbers are the same. Our guide How to Write Set Up Box Measurements shows this with a diagram.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing up outside and inside dimensions.
- Forgetting the lid depth or the insert.
- Measuring in centimeters and rounding when converting.
- Measuring only one sample when products vary.
Size range
Brimar makes set-up boxes from 1.25″ x 0.75″ x 0.5″ up to 22″ x 15″ x 7″. See the Set Up Boxes page.
