Short answer: A full-depth lid slides all the way down to cover the whole base, for a solid, classic look and maximum protection. A shallow lid covers only the top part of the base, so the base shows below it and the box is easier to open. Choose based on protection, looks and how the box will be opened. Brimar can make any lid depth that creates the look you want, so you’re not limited to these two.
Lid and base: the basics
A Brimar set-up box has two pieces: a base (bottom) and a lid (cover). The lid is made slightly larger than the base so it fits over it. How far the lid comes down the sides is the lid depth.
Full-depth lid
The lid’s sides are about as tall as the base, so the closed box looks like one solid block.
- Pros: Strong double walls all around, which helps protect heavier or fragile products and makes stacking more secure. Plenty of space on the lid sides for printing.
- Good for: Apparel, gift sets, industrial parts and keepsake boxes people reuse for storage.
- Keep in mind: Opening can take a moment, since the lid slides off along the full height. Some buyers like that “slow reveal.”
Shallow lid
The lid only comes partway down, so part of the base shows below it.
- Pros: Easy to lift off. You can show off a contrasting base color or pattern for a two-tone look. Uses a little less material in the lid.
- Good for: Candy, jewelry, stationery and gift boxes that are opened often or displayed on a shelf.
- Keep in mind: The exposed base is a single wall, so it’s a bit less protective.
How to write the sizes
Brimar writes set-up box sizes as Length x Width x Depth (L x W x D), measured on the inside, in inches. “Depth” is the vertical height. See How to Write Set Up Box Measurements.
For the lid, just tell us the lid depth you want (for example, “lid depth 1 inch” or “full-depth lid”). We’ll use our experience to make the lid fit the base the right way.
Tips for choosing
- If the box will be shipped or stacked, lean toward a full-depth lid.
- If it will be opened often or displayed, a shallow lid is convenient.
- Want a pop of color? Pair a shallow lid with a contrasting base wrap.
- Not sure? Ask for samples of similar boxes we’ve made, or a custom sample, usually for a fee. See our FAQ, or browse the set-up box gallery.
