Short answer: A rigid set-up box is a sturdy two-piece box, a lid and a base, made from thick cardboard wrapped in paper. It arrives fully assembled and can’t be folded flat, while a folding carton is made from thinner board and is shipped flat and folded into shape by the person packing it.
What a set-up box is
At Brimar, a set-up box (also called a rigid box or paper box) is made by wrapping and gluing paper around a cardboard tray. You get two pieces: a base (bottom) and a lid (cover). Think of a classic board game box, like Monopoly®.
Because the box is already built, it can’t be broken down flat without destroying it. That’s what “rigid” means here: it keeps its shape. Brimar makes set-up boxes from as small as 1.25″ x 0.75″ x 0.5″ (big enough for a ring) up to 22″ x 15″ x 7″ (big enough for a jacket or a machine part).
What a folding carton is
A folding carton is the kind of box you see on cereal, toothpaste or medicine. It’s printed and die-cut from one thin sheet of paperboard, shipped flat, and then folded and tucked or glued into shape on a packing line or by hand. Folding cartons are light and cheap to ship empty, but they feel thin and can show raw cut edges.
The main differences
- Strength: Set-up boxes use thick chipboard (0.030″ to 0.100″ at Brimar), so they protect heavier or more fragile products.
- Look and feel: The paper wrap covers the edges, so there are no unsightly raw edges. Customers often see the box’s quality as part of the product’s quality.
- Labor: A set-up box shows up ready to pack. Nobody on your team has to fold or glue anything.
- Reuse: People tend to keep sturdy lid-and-base boxes for storage, so your brand stays in front of them longer.
- Space: Because they’re already assembled, set-up boxes take more room in transit and storage than flat cartons. Brimar can design a custom warehousing program to help with that.
When a set-up box is the right choice
Choose a set-up box when the packaging needs to say “premium,” protect something valuable, or be part of the gift. Brimar has made set-up boxes for famous chefs, world-famous clothing designers, best-selling authors and three US Presidents, and also for heavy industrial parts.
